The Open Door Jamaica Foundation (ODJF) has strengthened its support for persons with disabilities affected by Hurricane Melissa with the donation of 50 comprehensive care packages and critical assistive and medical supplies to the Cornwall Combined Disabilities Association (CCDA).

The care packages, earmarked for blind and visually impaired members in St. James, bring ODJF’s total post-hurricane contribution to the association to 100 packages. The latest intervention also included six wheelchairs, four walkers, five white/blind canes, three blood pressure monitors, 20 packs of adult diapers and 20 packs of disposable gloves. The items were selected in consultation with the CCDA to respond to the immediate needs of elderly persons and persons with disabilities.

The intervention was supported through a US $10,000 grant from WalkGood LA’s Jamaica Hurricane Relief Fund, which is supporting ODJF’s longer-term recovery efforts for vulnerable communities following Hurricane Melissa.
Dr. Terri-Karelle Johnson, Executive Director and Founder of ODJF, said the intervention reflects the Foundation’s commitment to sustained and inclusive recovery. According to her,
“Recovery does not end when the immediate emergency passes. For persons with disabilities and the families who support them, the challenges can continue long afterwards. Our commitment is to keep showing up, working with organisations like the CCDA to provide practical support that restores independence, dignity and stability.”

She added that partnerships such as the one with WalkGood LA are critical to ensuring vulnerable Jamaicans are not overlooked during long-term recovery.
Robert Blake, President of the CCDA, echoed the sentiments of Johnson and welcomed the continued assistance from the ODJF, noting the importance of continued support as affected families continue to rebuild.
“For our members, support like this has an impact that goes well beyond the items being donated. The care packages help to ease some of the pressure on families, while the wheelchairs, walkers and canes provide critical support for persons who depend on these devices for their mobility and independence. This intervention will make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of the people we serve,” – Robert Blake, President of the CCDA
